The golden eagle spread his wings and took flight from the highest limbs of the oak tree at the edge of the meadow. The tiny creature moving through the grass could not see this death approaching. The eagle turned in a tight loop and then fell straight down toward the field mouse. The eagle did not have time to veer or pull up when the elf raised up out of the grass with his arrow nocked and ready. The arrow struck the eagle just before his talons closed on the mouse. The great bird did not even have time to screech before he struck the ground with a bone jarring thud, rolling tail over beak in the grass.
The bird came up on its feet. One of its wings had been pierced through and through very near the shoulder. It could not fold its wings nor could it hop or run with the long arrow projecting from both sides of its body. It bit at the arrow with its beak and tried to put up its claw to grasp the thing, but it was hopeless. The elf chased across the grass to the downed bird. The eagle stood still with its beak open waiting for its attacker to come within reach. The elf was wary of the talons and beak of the raptor. He approached cautiously and laid his long gray bow on the grass before loosing a silver bag from his belt. He held the bag up and made a clucking sound. The bird looked up at the bag quizzically. When the bag came down over its head, it fluttered its wings and then fell still as the pain engulfed it along with the black interior of the bag.
Several more elves came running from the woods nearby to congratulate their companion on his success. The eagle had been plaguing the creatures of the meadow for a bit now and it was a good prize. Its beautiful feathers would make wonderful adornments for their hair and their outfits.
Each of them touched the bag cautiously and then jumped back when the eagle moved inside it. They turned as a group and hurried back to the woods. The archer had the bag slung over his back.
The small hunting party made it halfway back to their camp when suddenly the bag became very heavy. The archer cried out in alarm as the strings holding the sack to his shoulder snapped and the bag fell to the ground. He and his friends stood back and watched in alarm as the seams split and the form of a man appeared before them. The man was not awake. He lay face down on the forest floor with the arrow protruding from the back of his upper arm.
âMagick!â one of the elves shouted and fell back. âEnchantment! Sorcery! This is a great wizard! We will be killed or turned into toadstools!â They pressed their hands to their pointy ears and hopped about frantically, unsure of whether to run or remain in the open.
